Sailing Jobs: Dinghy Instructor

  • Sailing Ability: Pass a Pre-entry Sailing Assessment
  • Prior Qualifications: RYA Powerboat Level 2 and RYA First Aid
  • Minimum Age: 16
  • Attend: Five day course at a RYA centre run by a RYA Coach/Assessor

A Dinghy Instructor, one of the sailing jobs, is a very competent and very experienced small boat sailor, who is capable of sailing a training boat confidently in stronger winds and handling small powerboats.

The instructor has been assessed and is capable of confidently instruction children or adults in the art of sailing in most Sailing qualifications.

The instructor must work underneath a Senior Instructor as he or she has not been assessed as competent in running a sailing school.

The candidate must have done the pre-entry sailing assessment within one year before the instructor training.

As of yet I have not done this qualification (but am looking forward to doing it soon), but I know people at BTYC who have done it relatively recently.

They said they were nervous, but it wasn't too hard. They daid that they were actually taught how to instruct single handler dinghy sailing rather than two person dinghies so post assessment they needed to do some teaching in two person boats to make the change.

The course was run in Plymouth, where there is a RYA Coach or Assessor rather than at the Sailing Club itself. Also the Dinghy Instructor qualification can be used at any club or school unlike the Assistant Instructor qualification, which can only be used in the sailing center at which you did it.
