Which boat to buy

by Chuck
(Norfolk, VA)

My two girls are getting old enough that I would like to get them into sailing. I'd like to buy a boat that is relatively simple to sail and learn on, easy to trailer and could handle the 3 of us. Oh, and something that I could fly a chute on. I was thinking of an Albacore or J22. I've been away from sailing for awhile so suggestion would be helpful?

Thanks

Can't give a decisive answer.

Hi Chuck,

This is no easy matter for me: don't know the waters you sail, don't know the quality of your helmsmanship and some other matters. On top of that you give a choice between a rather small centreboard boat (could only find a 15 ft version) and a rather big keelboat that needs a crane to get in and out of the water.
If I were you I'd contact owner's clubs and ask info, or a trial run with your girls. You could also go to a marina and ask around, most sailors (at least here in Europe) like to show off...!
You could also find a sailing club in your neighbourhood (on this site, click on USA sailing clubs in Sailing directory) and let your girls have a season of lessons there; if they don't like it you have avoided a big expensive mistake.
I'm a father too, and believe me: we're lousy teachers where it concerns our own children.
More questions? Ask them here.
Good luck with sailing and your kids,

Han.
