Caribbean Sailing Schools Can Change Your Life

Caribbean sailing schools are available throughout the region where you can learn to captain your own vessel or to become a crew member on a boat belonging to someone else.
If you have ever dreamed of living a life that includes sunny skies, warm tropical waters, and sweet breezes year round, your dreams can come true by becoming a part of the tourism world in the Caribbean. Of course, this is not a life of ease, lying by the beach and watching the waves roll in; however, making a living outdoors, sailing or working as a crew member aboard a pleasure yacht in the Caribbean is by far preferable to some over working daily at a desk in a cubicle.

As it turns out, learning to captain a luxury yacht, sailing yacht, or catamaran, or working as a crewmember can be as fun as actually doing the job. Caribbean sailing schools are hands-on education systems that combine classroom work with actual boating experience. If you seek out a reputable education provider, you will learn from experienced instructors, often recognized by the American Sailing Association as qualified to teach would-be yachtsman.

Classroom experience is followed by a period of time, generally a week to a week and a half, on board a yacht in the Caribbean region. You will learn how to handle your vessel, how to troubleshoot when problems occur, and how best to talk to and treat your passengers. Most successful sailing schools will even help place you in a paying position.

Depending on the nature of the school you choose, upon graduation, you will be eligible to crew a Super Yacht, Mega Yacht, or Catamaran for a multi day trip to one or more of the Caribbean Islands, manage day cruises out of one of the many Caribbean ports, or eventually captain your own vessel. If all of this sounds too good to be true, check out a few of the many Caribbean sailing schools available.

Do I have to take the classes?

There are ample opportunities for anyone who has a boat to set up shop in areas of the Caribbean. However, in order to attain affordable insurance to cover your business for loss, injury, or at worst, a law suit, it is to your advantage to take classes. If you are looking for a job as a crew member on one of the many multi day cruising vessels, you will not be able to compete if you have not completed the courses designed to train you in this industry.

What to look for in a sailing school?

You will find that there are many Caribbean sailing schools from which to choose. This will be an easier process if you know what to look for. Be sure to choose a school that offers hands-on training aboard a vessel. This is not something you can learn efficiently, simply talking about it in a classroom, and a potential employer will look for that practical experience.

Find out what certifications each school offers. These will mean nothing to you unless you already know what kinds of jobs you would like acquire. Talk to potential employers to find out what they look for and what they require.

This will guide you in choosing the right certification program and the right school for you. Finally, do a little research into the background of your instructors. Backing from the American Sailing Association is an excellent indicator that you are learning from someone knowledgeable enough to teah.
